Subject: Self-introduction
Dear Professor Blackstone,
I am a first-year student enrolled in the Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Engineering (MDME) program at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). In contrast to many of my peers, I graduated from Temasek Polytechnic (TP) with a background in product and industrial design. During my time working as a designer, I had the opportunity to collaborate with skilled engineers who left a lasting impression on me with their extensive technical knowledge and systematic problem-solving abilities. While my design education focused on fostering creativity, working alongside these engineers made me realise that creating a successful product goes beyond aesthetics; it also requires functionality. These experiences ignited my interest in engineering, and I aim to integrate this newfound knowledge with my design skills to craft products that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional.
One notable communication strength that I possess is the ability to captivate everyone's attention particularly during critical moments. Regardless if it's in a fast-paced meeting or when deadlines are tight, I have a knack for delivering information in a compelling manner that ensure everyone is engaged and focused. This skill enables me to effectively convey crucial messages and rally the team's attention during high-pressure situations. On that note, I'm aware of myself occasionally being overly direct with my words, bordering on being too firm. While my intention is to be clear and effective, I acknowledge that there are instances where a more tactful approach might be more appropriate.
In this module, I seek to refine my communication style, striking a more optimal balance between clarity and sensitivity in diverse situations. Additionally, I aim to enhance my proficiency in report writing, recognising its direct relevance to my role as a future Lead Engineer within the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and its significant impact on my professional development.
Regards,
Robin Toh Zhen Yong
Dear Robin,
Thank you for this fluent and most informative letter. In it you address all the key points from the brief and illustrate each with clear, tangible examples. In particular, I find your discussion of how both aesthetics and fuctionality contribute to design interesting, but I wonder if that is not been standard operating practice for many designers for quite a long time. To learn more about your views, I look forward to our ongoing discussions.
Another bit of this letter that really captures your readers' interest is when you state that you have "the ability to captivate everyone's attention particularly during critical moments." Now I'd suggest you are setting yourself up here for high expectations from us when,…
Good day, Robinius the IV. Your letter was very clear and concise, and i had a great time reading it. Not only were your uses of the past tense consistent throughout the letter, but you also used unique phrases and vocabulary to make ur letter interesting to read, some of which include, "...have a knack, tactful, optimal balance" and many others. That, I have to respect as even I would struggle to use these phrases, which makes your letter unique. Good luck for your future endeavours in the Navy, and I hope we get along in class.
